Is Routine Pet Health Insurance Coverage Worth It?

Before we answer the question, let's first go over what routine health coverage is.

Most routine care coverage includes:

Annual checkups
Vaccinations
Deworming
Prophylactic teeth cleaning
Spaying & neutering

But are these things you want to pay a high premium for? Or would you rather pay these costs out of pocket?

In this article, we'll present both sides of the argument, and let you decide.

Worth it:

People who like routine coverage like how hassle-free it is. They simply send in their veterinarian bills and pay a regular premium that is never a surprise to them. They never have to sit in their vet's office with a mental calculator going off in their mind, and can enjoy the peace of mind that everything will be covered.

Not worth it:

Insurance is for accidents - for the unexpected. Routine appointments scheduled two weeks in advance are usually not life-threatening nor are they considered accidents. Getting routine health coverage can cost more than paying your veterinarian directly.

Optional Routine Care Plans

These plans pay a fixed dollar amount toward an approved list of procedures and items.

An example would be if you were given a $100 coupon for spaying or neutering. You save $100, but only because your insurance company pays it to your vet.

Now imagine having an entire book of these coupons.

Worth it:

If you add up the savings from all the coupons you save a lot more than what it costs to buy the book - good deal, right?

Not worth it:

Chances are you're not going to use every coupon. So is there enough benefit to outweigh the lack of use?

Tip:

If this "coupon book" concept (Optional Routine Care Plan) sounds like something you are interested in, it is important that you go to your chosen pet insurance provider
and find out what procedures and items they give coverage for.

Only you know what your pet needs and how much it's worth to you.

"Our last pet's health really went south as he got older. He needed testing, x-rays, cardio test, surgeries, daily meds, etc. Therefore, being very aware of the cost, we decided to try pet insurance this time around. Thank you for your assistance. I have selected insurance for my new puppy. Your website was a very useful tool to compare companies / polices. Thanks!"
